Male Proboscis Monkey in Tree

Male Proboscis Monkey in Tree

The proboscis monkey live near water--swamps or rivers--in harem groups dominated by an alpha male. This male is the alpha of the troop living in the mangrove forests at Bako NP. He has exclusive breeding rights in the group. His large nose is a display of dominance to other males, an attractive sexual characteristic to females, and an "amplifier" to the loud honking calls the males make when roosting at night. They eat seeds and leaves constantly.
