Male Orangutan, Afternoon, Danum Valley
We saw our first orangutan on our first morning in Danum Valley, a protected area of pristine rainforest in the Malaysian state of Sabah. It must have been comical watching us crash through the thick forest with huge camera lenses and tripods trying to get a photo of this fantastic great ape through the thick foliage. We were all soaking wet from the humidity and bleeding from leech bites, but who knew if we would have another chance to see this great ape in the wild. I did not get a good photo at the first outing, but later in the afternoon we spent time with the same guy much closer to the lodge. As it turned out, we had a number of opportunities with orangutans. None were as exciting, though, as the first sighting.
